An explanation, history, reason for the Memorial Day holiday in exactly 60 seconds.

Here are a few things you might want to know about Memorial Day.

Memorial day is a special day set aside to honor the soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom here in america.

It originated after the civil war and used to be called Decoration Day because it was a day to decorate the soldiers graves with flowers.

For many years decoration day was on the 30th of may. But, eventually, [ after the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968, ] memorial day was moved from may 30th to a Monday – giving us a 3 day weekend.

Memorial day is on the last Monday in May.

that makes it easy to remember so it doesn’t get confused with veteran day or labor day

Today, Memorial day is celebrate as a sort of rite to summer. It is almost literally the first day of summer and is celebrated with picnics, BBQ, road trips, and maybe even the indy500. Which, unfortunately, may distract from the original purpose of the holiday.

A few things to know:

1) all american flags are hung at half-staff  [until noon]

2) a national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. in your local local time.

So you might want to set tell you phone to remind you to take a moment at 3:00pm for those who heroically gave their lives in battle.

Jesus said, No one shows greater love than when he lays down his life for his friends.
